Joe Magnacca, widely seen as the architect of Duane Reade’s upscale beauty concept Look Boutique, has left Walgreen Co. to for the top spot at RadioShack Corp., effective Feb. 11. He has also been named to RadioShack’s board.
Magnacca was a key figure in the bold transformation of Duane Reade, where he served as chief marketing officer and later as president. He helped overhaul Duane Reade — previously known for a stock them high and let them fly approach— from a overstocked, uninviting metro-New York drugstore chain into a fleet of sleeker stores with wider aisles, natural light and a more focused and upscale assortment. Its flagship locations are outfitted with sushi bars, frozen yogurt bars and manicure bars. The changes helped to attract the attention of Walgreens, which acquired Duane Reade in 2010 and promoted Magnacca to executive vice president and president of Daily Living Products and Solutions. In that post he oversaw all of Walgreen's marketing and merchandising operations across more than 8,000 stores.
Prior to Duane Reade, Magnacca, a native Canadian, held various senior merchandising and marketing roles at two retail chains in Canada, namely spent Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaw, where he began his career.
