LONDON — Michelle Emmerson has been appointed chief executive officer and a member of the board of Walpole British Luxury, the not-for-profit British luxury trade organization.
Emmerson replaces Julia Carrick, who stood down as ceo of Walpole in September, and is now an ambassador for the organization. Emmerson will report to Ben Hughes, chairman of Walpole, and her appointment is effective immediately.
Emmerson first joined Walpole in October as managing director, and Walpole said that since then she has conducted an “extensive review,” of the organization, making “engagement with government,” a priority. Walpole pointed to recent British government action to streamline the U.K. visa application process for Chinese tourists, in response to the U.K. China Visa Alliance, of which Walpole is a founding member.
Emmerson joined Walpole from the online retailer Asos, where she was group services and people director. She has also held board level and senior roles with BBC Worldwide and EMI Music.
Hughes, who alongside serving as chairman of Walpole is also global commercial director and deputy ceo of the Financial Times said: “[Emmerson] has worked hard over the last eight months to position Walpole as the collective voice of luxury and to develop our strategy and ambitions.”
In addition to Emmerson’s appointment, last week perfumer and entrepreneur Jo Malone joined Walpole’s board.
