For three days in May, top leaders of the global cosmetics industry gathered in Palm Beach, Fla., to explore the shifting landscape and emerging consumers that pose a riddle as well as a much-sought prize. Jean-Paul Agon of L’Oréal led off a series of 18 high-level speeches and panel sessions that provided not only discussion and debate but a bit of controversy over the world that beauty is pioneering and the strange new breed of consumers found there. “They are totally diverse,” he said. “They are perfectly informed.
