– SENATE PASSES ANDEAN BILL: The Senate unanimously passed a 10-month extension of trade benefits for Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador on Thursday, giving some relief to importers that shipped $1.23 billion worth of apparel made in the region to the U.S. last year, and domestic textile producers that exported millions of dollars of fabric and yarns to the region. President Bush is expected to sign the bill. The preference program, which was due to expire today, gives duty free status to apparel made in the four Andean countries and exported to the U.S. Textile producers benefit from the program because the rules require that U.S. importers largely use American-made fiber, fabrics and yarns in the apparel they make in the four countries.
