Marzotto Trial Delayed by Lawyers Strike

Judge Lucio Nardi said on Friday it was postponed to June 27.

DELAYED BY A STRIKE: A strike of Italian lawyers affected the first hearing of Matteo Marzotto’s tax trial, which was expected to kick off on Friday at Milan’s courthouse. Judge Lucio Nardi said it was postponed to June 27.

Neither Marzotto nor his sister Diamante, indicted with other defendants for alleged omission of earnings declaration and tax evasion, were present in court on Friday. Matteo Marzotto has in the past declared that he had “always operated in the full respect of the law.”

Separately, the first hearing of the appeal trial of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana has been set for Tuesday. In June, Dolce and Gabbana, as well as four other defendants, were found guilty in the designers’ long-running tax evasion case. The designers were acquitted on the second count they were originally charged with, which concerned the valuation of the company and the taxes paid based on that valuation.
