BERLIN — Dots marked the hotspot Tuesday evening as singer Beth Ditto took a break from her concert tour to host a launch party here in honor of her multicolored MAC Cosmetics limited-edition collaboration.
Berlin art space Made was bedecked with black, teal and fluorescent polka dots — echoing the theme and colors of the MAC Beth Ditto collection — and packed with guests including blogger Perez Hilton, performer Peaches, actress Heike Makatsch and Lala Berlin designer Leyla Piedayesh.
Wearing a silky, colorful belted tunic over a lemon-colored lace underskirt, the Gossip frontwoman cheerfully greeted the crowd circling her spotted stage. The performance was short but sweet: two songs from the group's May release, the disco-tinged “A Joyful Noise,” sung to recorded music spun by her guitarist. Backed by two synchronized dancers dressed Grunge Lite, Ditto also belted out snippets of Seventies favorites "Copacabana" and "Hot Stuff," and ended the show by pulling Made cofounder and artist Tadi Rock on stage for a last dance.
Prior to the performance, Ditto told WWD she may have spent more creative time on her makeup products than people expected. She came up with many of the line’s punny names, which include Near Beth Experience, Life and Beth, Beth Mask and Beth or Glory.
“Is that a job where you just name products? Because I would really love to have that job," she enthused.
Value was also key for Ditto, who was pleased that the Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liner sticks are double-ended, blendable and have multiple uses. One shade is called Little Miss Moffet, which points to one of Ditto's beauty icons, Sixties model Peggy Moffitt.
Ditto also named Grace Jones among favorite women she admires for their ability to transform themselves without losing their own identities. But the one-of-a-kind performer said she didn't think she has an original signature look.
"I think that at this point, everything's already been done. I just feel like there were so many dark-headed girls with lots of eyeliner on," admitted the born-blonde Ditto, who has dyed her locks jet since she was about 14. Ditto also discussed the influence the Nineties-born underground feminist punk movement Riot Grrrl had on her style and soul, and how she's come to terms with the contradictions surrounding her current immersion in the image-conscious, consumer-driven fashion world, which sometimes seems at odds with her modest roots and empowerment ideals.
But as far as working with makeup goes, "it's a job that I want to do, and I don't know any better way [to do] it than to work with MAC," said Ditto.
The MAC Beth Ditto collection is on counters now, while Ditto herself is back on the road. The next Gossip concert is slated for Switzerland tonight.

And most importantly artistic. He has never compromised his artistic vision for the sake of commodity.” (📷: @zefashioninsider)
