In a move that merges mobile commerce with retail’s brick-and-mortar, American Eagle Outfitters is launching the Shopkick application today, guaranteeing users instant communication of store deals once they enter the location and the opportunity to earn “kickbucks.”
Co-founded by chief executive officer Cyriac Roeding, Shopkick is one of the newest software apps for use on smartphones. The early-stage venture raised $15 million in July in its second round of financing, which was led by Greylock Partners and includes a consortium of investors such as Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Citi Growth Ventures & Innovation Group. Greylock and Kleiner were also first-round investors, investing a total of $5 million in the start-up. Greylock partner Reid Hoffman, who is also co-founder and executive chairman of LinkedIn, has a Shopkick board seat.
