Outerwear struggled last winter because of the mild weather, and firms are no doubt hoping back-to-school shoppers will give them a boost. According to The NPD Group, retail sales of women’s outerwear totaled $4.2 billion in the 12 months ended July 31. As college students head back to campuses this month, they’re searching for outerwear pieces that can take them from the classroom to the nightclub. So they’re buying classic silhouettes like trenches, peacoats and parkas from contemporary designers who have subtly updated these looks in a modern way. Here, WWD surveys college students on their outerwear purchases for the school term ahead.
Name: Chelsey Lutz Age: 21 College: Northeastern University,Boston Jacket she bought for fall: Rag & Bone Flare Trench, $690 Where she bought it: Shopbop.com Why she purchased it: “I love the Flare Trenchcoat Rag & Bone is doing for the fall because they were able to update a classic and make it stand out, in a simple, chic way. "It's really hard sometimes. I think I have a reputation for being really tough and aggressive and pushy but I really am a very shy person who wants to be liked, and that's the conflict constantly. There's something that takes hold - I want people to like me, I don't want to be mean - but if I see something that just cries out to be answered, I go for it," says renowned NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell.
