Rather than stage another amorphous art and fashion event, next month’s MOVE! in São Paulo aims to bring to life fashion, dance, visual and performance art and theater.
Revving up the experience will be installations and performances by collaborators such as Francisco Costa and Vik Muniz; Marc Jacobs and Rob Pruitt, and Cynthia Rowley and Olaf Breuning. In total, there will be eight movements including “Pose” by Ryan McNamara with Diane von Furstenberg and Oskar Metsavaht for Osklen during the March 8-19 run at the cultural institution SESC’s new flagship arts center in Belenzinho. Thousands are expected to check out MOVE!, which will overlap with the start of São Paulo Fashion Week.
Visionaire’s cofounder Cecilia Dean, who organized the project with art and fashion writer David Colman, said the aim is to get away from the invitation-only worlds of art and fashion. “Where others see clothing on mannequins or art hanging on walls, we see the merging of art and fashion as dynamic, full of movement, and human energy. I like to think we offer an ‘experience,’ more than just an exhibition to visit,” Dean said via e-mail.
Their Brazilian extravaganza is an offshoot of something first presented at the Museum of Modern Art’s MoMA PS1. Crowd favorites like “Looks” by Pruitt and Jacobs and “Splash” by Breuning and Rowley will be among the repeat performers. Many will certainly take notice of “Tree Pants” by Peter Coffin and Ellus, who have joined forces to deck out 10 or 15 human-size tree trunks in “fastidiously made custom-made jeans,” Colman said. Even more intriguing may be “Kalos,” a live water ballet as envisioned by Calvin Klein Collection’s Costa and Muniz that also will be projected with kaleidoscopic software and digital imaging on a wall screen. Visitors will be able to watch the performance through the main atrium’s glass floor.
“Ligatura” by Maurices Ianes and Alexandre Herchcovitch, “Grafiocouture” by Banzai Studio and Pedro Lourenco and “The Big Picture” by Ricardo de Castro and Dudu Bertholini for Neon are also in the works.
