The digital editor grabs the title of director of editorial strategy for Cosmopolitan’s sister site Redbook. Ashley Mateo will become site director of Redbook and report to Odell. Odell will continue to report to Hearst Magazines Digital Media senior vice president and editorial director Kate Lewis. At Hearst, digital editors are separated from their print counterparts, and thus report in to a digital executive, not the magazine’s editor in chief.
“Amy is a focused and imaginative leader who understands how to tap an audience and adapt a brand to the conversation of the internet,” Lewis said. “She has successfully done so with Cosmopolitan.com over the past three years and I look forward to the direction in which she and Ashley will take Redbookmag.com.”
According to Hearst, under Odell’s leadership, Cosmopolitan.com’s traffic and social following has “more than tripled” and “editorial content has expanded to include a wide range of feminist, political and LGBTQ topics alongside relationship, parenting, tech, fashion, beauty and celebrity coverage.”
“What’s so great about Redbook is that it’s real and relatable with lots of personality,” offered Odell, who came to Hearst from Buzzfeed in 2013. “I’m confident Ashley will translate that smart, funny, and friendly voice to the website. She’ll take on a variety of subjects important to young women and by doing so, will create an even bigger, more engaged community of Redbook readers on the internet.”
Before joining Redbook, Mateo had been the digital deputy editor at Shape for nearly two years where she managed the site’s editorial calendar, top edited all stories and oversaw a team of writers, producers, editors and freelancers. Prior to that, she held various editorial roles at Refinery29, Self and Hearst’s Seventeen.
