InStyle said Tuesday that it has hired Faye Penn as editorial projects director.
A former executive editor at The New York Observer and features editor at New York magazine and The New York Post, Penn will join the Time. Inc.-owned glossy on Wednesday.
Penn will work on brand content across platforms, which includes creating new initiatives and revenue streams for InStyle. She will report to Ariel Foxman, editorial director of InStyle and StyleWatch.
Foxman told WWD: “InStyle’s cross-platform momentum is on the upswing, and we are serving our readers with more incredible access and exclusive content than we ever have before.” He added that Penn had worked at InStyle years ago, so understands “our brand DNA.”
In her previous role at InStyle, Penn wrote a column called “Style & Error,” a first-hand account of her misadventures in sewing her own clothing, buying shapewear, patronizing student hair colorists and other things. She also served as creative director of an online video casting startup whose technology has been re-branded as Personif. The entrepreneurial Penn is also the founder of Brokelyn.com, a site she developed in 2009 devoted to inexpensive restaurants, bars and shopping destinations in Brooklyn.
In addition to Penn’s hire, InStyle said it promoted assistant managing editors Patrick Moffitt and Lavinel Savu to the shared role of executive managing editor.
Moffit will oversee the strategic coordination of all print, digital and social editorial content, while Savu will continue to oversee editorial budgets and digital photo shoots, as well as manage international operations, licensing, revenue extensions and finance on a macro level.
InStyle noted that the promoted editors were given some of the responsibilities that were previously overseen by Lisa Arbetter, who left InStyle to become the editor in chief of sister magazine StyleWatch in March.
