NEW YORK — Deepak Chopra, Lance Armstrong and Michael J. Fox may well have been the least likely guests one would have expected to find at Wednesday night’s Modern Bride 25 Trendsetters awards dinner, but each of those three presenters helped capture the event’s element of surprise.
Designers were well represented at the New York Palace event by award winners Carolina Herrera and Jenna Lyons, J. Crew’s senior vice president of women’s design, as well as presenters Naeem Khan, Nicole Miller and Lela Rose, who shared the stage with Celerie Kemble. Another one of this year’s winners, wedding cake creator Colette Peters worked as a Tiffany designer before crossing over into the culinary world. Olivier Giugni, another trendsetter for his floral displays, was plucked by Pierre Cardin as design director of Les Fleurs de Maxim’s in Paris in 1980 and now owns his own business here.
Herrera’s youngest daughter, Patricia Lansing, told guests how her mother does not believe in sexy wedding dresses but favors more romantic, grand and timeless gowns. Lansing also noted how she was among a long line of women, including Caroline Kennedy and Mariska Hargitay, who wore a Carolina Herrera dress on her wedding day.
Afterward, Herrera was ever gracious about the unsolicited praise: “Getting an award is such an honor. I say it every time, but it’s true.”
Armstrong, the seven-time winner of the Tour de France, relished his moment at the mic in honoring his friend, Daniel Boulud. “I find it incredibly ironic that I finally get to present an award to a Frenchman,” he said.
Earlier in the night, the Nike frontman said he can’t compete with the restaurateur’s cooking skills. “I don’t cook. Daniel’s probably the best cook in America and I’m the worst,” said Armstrong.
