While much-photographed Scarlett Johansson and Naomi Watts have been on veritable world tours over the past few weeks promoting “Match Point” and “King Kong,” respectively, they’re not the only actresses pulling out all the style stops. From A-listers such as Uma Thurman to up-and-comers such as Anne Hathaway, a slew of thespians has been treading the red carpet in winter white and chic black ensembles.
Zhang Ziyi worked the gamine pose in Milan – suitably, in Giorgio Armani, complete with a Parisian beret and lush chubby to ward off the chill. Further north, Juliette Binoche went completely French with a full le smoking look for the Paris premiere of “Mary,” while in London, Tilda Swinton channeled her “Chronicles of Narnia” White Witch role in a long dress and lace-trimmed jacket specially made for her by Stefano Pilati of Yves Saint Laurent.
In New York, Thurman went the goddess route in a backless Chanel gown at the premiere of “The Producers,” and Michelle Williams chose a ladylike Oscar de la Renta for her first post-pregnancy outing. A continent away in Los Angeles, a girly Mena Suvari flirted her way among the paparazzi in a strapless ivory frock for the opening of “Rumor Has It.”
And in the nearest thing to a nod to the holiday season, Hathaway’s paillette-bedecked black Chanel gown at the New York premiere of “Brokeback Mountain” was at once lively and sophisticated.
Clearly, you don’t need tinsel to shine, even in Hollywood.
