LONDON — Topshop tycoon Sir Philip Green and the TV producer and personality Simon Cowell are planning to form a global entertainment company that would create original content and encompass merchandising and celebrity deals.

According to sources in London, the two, who are longtime friends, are hoping to launch the new company officially over the next few weeks.

The sources said the project would be a multifaceted, multichannel project that would create content for Europe and the U.S., entertain audiences and market a variety of products linked to the TV shows.

“They are looking at Disney, who are the best people on the planet when it comes to merchandising,” said one industry source.

It is understood Green would keep his fashion and clothing businesses separate from the new venture, and share his business experience with the British-born entrepreneur Cowell, who is best known in the U.S. for his role on “American Idol.”

Further details of the new company could not be learned at press time.
