NET-WORTH NETWORK: What do the Greens and the Santo Domingos have in common? They’re among the richest married couples in Britain, according to the Sunday Times of London, which is drip-feeding some of its statistics to the public this week ahead of the publication of its annual Rich List on May 7.
Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli — he a Swiss pharmaceuticals entrepreneur and she his singer-songwriter wife — earned the top spot with a combined net worth of 11.5 billion pounds, or $15.5 billion, up 1.7 billion pounds, or $2.3 billion, from last year. The couple’s wealth comes from Santhera, a pharmaceutical business, and from the sale of Serono, a biotech business.
Newcomers to the list Alejandro Santo Domingo and Lady Charlotte Wellesley are third. The Colombian-American financier and the daughter of Charles Wellesley, the 9th Duke of Wellington, have a fortune valued at 3.9 billion pounds, or $5.2 billion.
Not far behind, at number four, is François-Henri Pinault, chief executive officer of Kering, and his actress wife Salma Hayek, whose net worth is calculated at 3.4 billion pounds, or $4.6 billion — up 1.1 billion pounds or $1.4 billion, on the previous year.
At number five, Arcadia owner Sir Philip Green and his wife Lady Tina Green are reported to have a combined net worth of 2.8 billion pounds, or $3.8 billion.
Figures have been converted from the pound at average exchange rates for 2016, the year on which the Sunday Times numbers are based.
