TALLEY DEPARTS ZAPPOS: WWD has learned that Zappos Couture has decided not to renew André Leon Talley’s contract as artistic director.

His contract is up on Thursday, according to sources familiar with the situation. The news was confirmed by Talley late Tuesday.

Talley inked a one-year deal with Zappos at the end of 2013. The former Vogue editor was charged with overseeing content on Zappos Couture’s site, including fashion shoots, videos and top trends. The purpose of his hire was to help the Amazon-owned site elevate its image by including the editor’s picks of high-end footwear for a more upscale clientele. Accomplishing such a feat is a tricky one, and rumor has it that the project was not driving sales.

At the time of the project’s launch, Talley told WWD: “The digital universe is a new, exciting opportunity for me to reach a broad audience in terms of the global luxury market.”

Zappos did not return requests seeking comment, but Talley hinted that he’s moving on to bigger things.

“I needed this much-valued freedom to explore new and exciting opportunities, and I am glad to be in talks with an exciting new venture, for my life, which I hope to be able to expand upon very soon,” he said without providing the full picture of his next endeavor.

The entrepreneurial fashion editor also plugged his final item for the footwear e-tailer, perhaps to emphasize the attention he brought to his former employer. “My final post, on Zappos, on the subject of Kanye, Kim and North Kardashian has received great attention,” he said. “Television programs contacted me to come on set and speak about my view that they, as a family, are new style icons.”
