Radar is joining the socialite craze and taking a shot at tabloids like Us Weekly with the feature “Socialites Are Just Like Us!” in its first issue of its third incarnation (but with new investors). Yet, while Us Weekly captures stars in random moments, such as Ben Affleck making his way through an airport security line at LAX, Radar’s February relaunch issue devotes 10 pages to overexposed socialites appearing in staged photos. They were photographed wearing gowns from Bill Blass and J.Mendel while eating burgers at a seedy diner, bowling at Port Authority and taking the subway. Tinsley Mortimer and Fabiola Beracasa happily jumped at the chance for more face time. “They are in on the joke,” said contributing editor Sarah Horne. “It is a concept of high fashion meets grungy, unexpected places.” But Radar fails to make its point: Stars are regularly photographed by Us munching on hot dogs. Do socialites really eat hamburgers in diners?
