Fashion, Retail Firms to Pitch at Consensus Conference

The program connects up-and-coming brands with potential investors.

NEW YORK — Boutique investment banking firm Consensus Advisors, along with The Nasdaq OMX Group, will present the third annual Next Great Consumer Brands Conference on May 1.

The conference will be at the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square. On the agenda are keynote addresses by Kevin Plank, founder and chief executive officer of Under Armour Inc., and Kathy Ireland, ceo and chief designer of Kathy Ireland Worldwide.

The event showcases up-and-coming brands by allowing them to provide short presentations to potential investors, such as from the worlds of private equity, venture capital, angels and commercial lenders.

The conference gives many first-time presenters experience in pitching to the investment community, as well as an opportunity to make connections with those in attendance via networking sessions throughout the day-long event.

Several firms in the apparel sector typically pitch at the conference. Some from Consensus conferences that later found investors are lingerie firm Journelle, which sold a majority stake to Triumph International; Bills Khakis, which found an investor in private equity firm Larsen MacColl Partners; jewelry buyer Circa, which garnered attention and a financial stake from Winona Capital Management, and running footwear firm Newton Running Co., which received an investment from Fireman Capital.

Firms connected to the fashion space that are scheduled to present this year include: men’s custom clothier J. Hilburn; Web retailer specializing in urban fashion and streetwear Karmaloop; fragrance and personal care firm Thymes; fashion brand Xcel Brands/Isaac Mizrahi, and L.A.-based high-end fashion retailer Kitson.
