Macy’s Taps Edelman to Foster International Growth

Macy's Inc. is getting more serious about going global.

Macy’s Inc. is getting more serious about going global.

On Thursday, the retailer named Daniel H. Edelman, president and chief operating officer of San Francisco-based Macy’s West, to a new corporate position, president of international retail development.

Macy’s said Edelman will research and analyze opportunities for the international expansion of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, and will remain based in San Francisco, reporting to Terry J. Lundgren, Macy’s chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Of Federated’s two store divisions, Bloomingdale’s could be the first to make a move overseas. The division has been exploring locations in the Middle East and Asia, and it appears that the first stop could be the Dubai Mall. The mall is under construction for a late 2008 or 2009 opening, and is to be the largest in the world.

Bloomingdale’s executives have also visited China, and are said to be eyeing Kuwait.

“Edelman will help us to explore ways to expand our brands internationally,” Lundgren said. “Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s already are known around the world as fashion leaders, and we believe that selective expansion internationally will provide additional opportunities for top-line growth.”

Robert B. Harrison, previously president and chief operating officer of Macy’s Northwest in Seattle, will succeed Edelman as president and chief operating officer of Macy’s West.

Harrison led the consolidation of Macy’s Northwest into Macy’s West. He will relocate to San Francisco and report to Jeff Gennette, chairman and ceo.

Edelman, 59, has served as president and chief operating officer of Macy’s West since February 2006. Previously, he was chairman and ceo of Macy’s Northwest since March 1998 and president of the division since February 1997. Prior to that, he spent six years as vice chairman of finance and operations at Macy’s West. He began his career in 1976 as an assistant accounting manager with Macy’s in Manhattan.

Harrison, 45, became president and chief operating officer of Macy’s Northwest in February 2006 following Macy’s acquisition of The May Department Stores Co. Previously, he was chairman of the former Robinsons-May chain.
