NEW YORK — Yohji Yamamoto is making a double-barreled landing in the Meatpacking District.

The designer next month will open a 1,500-square-foot unit dedicated to his namesake collection at 1 Gansevoort Street. Directly opposite, a 2,100-square-foot Y-3 store will open at 317 West 13th Street. The openings are set for Feb. 5.
The new store is the first Y-3 unit to open in Manhattan and will feature Y-3’s men’s and women’s collections, which for spring-summer 2008 are inspired by Japan’s ancient history, including the samurai and ninjas. Y-3 is a collaborative line between Yamamoto and Adidas.
The Yohji Yamamoto unit is the designer’s first collection store to open here in 20 years.
A Yohji Yamamoto flagship launched in 1988 at 103 Mercer Street. In 2005, the store expanded to make room for Y’s, the main sportswear line, and Y-3 along with the signature line. Besides men’s and women’s collections, the Yohji Yamamoto boutique on Gansevoort Street will offer Stormy Weather, the company’s fine jewelry collection produced in partnership with Mikimoto.
In the brightly lighted Yamamoto store, a key feature of the design is a cement courtyard, which cuts through the building.
The Y-3 store will have a striking contemporary and minimalist interior decorated in white, black and orange. One of the units most significant design elements is a glass garage door entrance.
Since September 2004, Y-3 has opened stores in Asia, Europe and the U.S. The second Y-3 monobrand unit in New York will launch in March in SoHo.
Y-3 will present its fall-winter 2008-2009 men’s and women’s collection on Feb. 3 during New York Fashion Week.
Yamamoto has been expanding his retail network, with his largest store, a 10,300-square-foot unit, opened in Antwerp, Belgium, in October.
