TOKYO — Abercrombie & Fitch has tapped Gucci Japan's former president, Toshiaki Tashiro, as director of its Japanese arm.
ANF, a 100 percent-owned subsidiary of Abercrombie & Fitch, was established with an initial investment of 100 million yen, or $91.8 million at current exchange. It was registered in Kawasaki City, a suburb of Tokyo, on May 18. Robert Singer, A&F's chief operating officer, was named to the same position at ANF. Prior to joining the American retailer, Singer was chief financial officer of Gucci Group.
Tashiro is a director of Georg Jensen. He started his career at Isetan, then established Barneys New York Japan in 1989 before becoming president of Gucci Japan in 1997. During his tenure at Gucci, Tashiro opened three flagships for the company in Omotesando, Shinjuku and Ginza and tripled sales of the brand within five years. He left Gucci in June 2004 after the contracts of then-chief executive officer Domenico De Sole and creative director Tom Ford were not renewed by Gucci parent PPR.
Tashiro could not be reached for comment on his appointment at ANF.
