British retail phenomenon Space NK, the apothecary chain known for its discerning mix of hard-to-find beauty brands, makes its retail debut Stateside this May, bringing with it a philosophy of rigorously selected brands in an environment free of intimidation. The brains behind the store, founder and creative director Nicky Kinnaird, says she wanted it to be an evolution of the existing Space NK’s and not a revolution. “We want to be true to our ethic of carrying the best in class, true innovators in their respective fields” says Kinnaird. To that end, the store, which will be located in New York’s SoHo, is airy, clean and modern, with an emphasis on customer service and learning. There will also be treatment rooms Kinnaird describes as “very calm, Zen-like spaces with a modern feel,” where customers can receive facials from the London-based brand Eve Lom. Says Kinnaird, “You feel as if you’re coming into somewhere that’s an area of expertise, where you can learn. It’s a nonintimidating environment where you feel you can touch items.” The flagship will carry over 50 beauty brands, including several European exclusives making their debut in the U.S. such as the glam organic line Sheerin O’kho and Zelens, created by skin cancer specialist Marco Lens. If all goes according to plan, look for more Space NK’s in NYC in the near future: Four more stores are slated to open within the year.
