Unitards, crop and bra tops and bike shorts are topping bestseller lists this spring at stores in Los Angeles, Chicago and San Antonio.

LOS ANGELES -- Jeffrey Liff, president of Know Bodies, a three-store chain based in Canoga Park, Calif., said his best-selling items are unitards retailing at around $32. Top brands have been City Lights, Capezio, Gilda Marx, Danskin, Moda Prima and three lines by Weekend Exercise -- Aerodynamics, Marika and the licensed Baryshnikov line.

Top colors are naturals and black. Cotton and Lycra spandex is the number one fabric, followed closely by Supplex nylon and Lycra.

Joyce Stevens, owner of Karabel Dance Wear, a three-store chain here, also singled out unitards, retailing from $28 to $60. Best-selling labels are Danskin, Moving On, Flexitard and Carushka. Black, beige, cream and muted pastels are key colors. Blends of cotton and Lycra and Supplex and Lycra are top-selling fabrics.

CHICAGO -- At Marshall Field's, top-selling bodywear items this spring are a mix of crop tops, bike pants and unitards, a spokeswoman said. Among the top looks are a crop top by Marika, retailing for $13.99, and a Marika bike short for $14.99, in mid-tone solids. Both items are of cotton and Lycra spandex.

Other top items include a solid unitard by Baryshnikov by Weekend Exercise, for $37, and a Baryshnikov solid bike short and crop top, each at $22. Colors are black, navy and white. All items are of cotton and Lycra. A best-selling crop top by Aerodynamics by Weekend Exercise of Supplex and Lycra retails for $22; a coordinating bike short and capri leggings in bright blue and teal, retail for $25 and $32, respectively.

At Sportmart, a sporting goods outlet, bra tops and bike shorts in muted dark solids, stripes or textured looks, are the winners, according to a buyer. Crop tops and bike shorts are key items, with top vendors cited as Marika by Weekend Exercise, Danskin and Gilda Marx.

SAN ANTONIO -- At the San Antonio division of Dillard's Department Stores, bestsellers are bra tops and bike shorts in lengths of four, five and seven inches, said a spokeswoman.The two top brands are Danskin and Softouch, she said.

Solids are the volume sellers, followed by stripes. The spokeswoman noted that Dillard's also is testing the Mossimo collection, a line of fashion bodywear with a streetwear look, at four units, and it's doing well.
