The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. topped the National Retail Federations' Hot 100 Retailers list, with a 164.3 percent revenue surge in 2006.
In its second year, the NRF list highlights retail companies that report the greatest year-over-year revenue percentage growth. Public companies with more than $100 million in sales were eligible for the list.
As a result of its acquisition of a group of department stores, including what was once Saks' northern department store division, Bon-Ton more than doubled the company's size and sales. As a result, the retailer bumped video game retailer GameStop from the top perch. Last year, GameStop scored the number-one slot by delivering a 68 percent year-over-year sales gain. This year GameStop was in the number-two spot followed by quick-serve operator and franchisor, Triarc Companies Inc., at number three.
Also included in the top 10 were specialty retailer Zumiez Inc. at number four, Coldwater Creek Inc. at number seven, Charlotte Russe Holding Corp. at number eight and Citi Trends Inc. at number 10.
According to the list, the convenience store channel experienced the highest growth last year with a 21.9 percent boost in average sales, while the department store sector continued its turnaround with 21.5 percent growth. Teen and tween specialty apparel stores rose 18.3 percent.
"Retailers can no longer deliver just a product; it's about the end-to-end experience for consumers," said Ivan Szeftel, president of retail services for Alliance Data, in a statement accompanying the NRF list. "This year's Hot 100 Retailers are leading the way in creating their own formula for growth that centers around the customer."
Teen retailers American Eagle Outfitters Inc., Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and Aéropostale Inc. came in at numbers 29, 32 and 42, respectively.
In women's apparel, Dress Barn Inc. was number 13, Talbots Inc. 21, Chico's FAS Inc. 43 and AnnTaylor Stores Corp. number 71. The mass merchants Target Corp. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. garnered spots 71 and 78, respectively.
This year all but four of the Hot 100 experienced sales gains of 10 percent or more.
Restaurants were included on the list for the first time, as well as a broader range of convenience retailers that includes travel centers.
