DUBAI – A fire engulfed the Address Hotel, adjacent to the Dubai Mall, on Thursday night. The hotel is owned by Emaar, the operator of the Dubai Mall, and linked to the mall with a short bridge. As the fire raged, retailers closed stores and evacuated staff from the mall, but the fire did not spread.
The mall’s tenants include numerous designer stores as well as Bloomingdale’s, Galeries Lafayette, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams.
According to press reports, 16 people were injured in the blaze, including one person who suffered a heart attack. Streets in the area of the 63-story hotel were also evacuated as police redirected traffic and pedestrians. The hotel is also close to the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, where a major fireworks display had been scheduled.
The cause of the blaze was still unclear.
