Syms Corp. named Joel Feigenbaum chief integration officer, in a new role to head up the Filene’s Basement division and organize Syms and Filene’s Basements units to be cobranded.

The appointment follows the recent departure of Mark Shulman, who was president of Filene’s Basement Inc., as reported first in WWD.

Syms bought Filene’s Basement last June and in September cobranded a store in Fairfield, Conn., so both nameplates hang over the entrance. Last week, a unit in Norwood, Mass. was similarly cobranded.

“Joel is a strategic hire for us. His strong skills round out our management team,” said Syms Corp. chairman and chief executive officer Marcy Syms. She said Feigenbaum will split his time between Filene’s Basement headquarters in Burlington, Mass. and Syms corporate headquarters in Secaucus, N.J., and report to her.

“This co-branding raises the bar in off-price retailing,” said the ceo. “Syms’ strength has always been in men’s tailored clothing and Filene’s strength has been designer women’s fashions.” She added more cobranded stores are on the drawing board for fall, but did not specify how many. The company operates 25 Syms and 23 Filene’s Basements as well as the two cobranded sites.

Feigenbaum was president of Reader’s Digest’s Books Are Fun Ltd. Earlier, he was chief operating officer of and president and chief operating officer of Century 21 stores. He began his career at Zayre’s and Target Stores.
