NEW YORK — After more than a decade, Les Ball resigned Wednesday as CEO of Corral West, a Cheyenne, Wyo.-based Western wear chain.
“After nearly 14 years, I’ve decided to step down,” he told DNR in an interview right before the announcement to his staff.
Ball said he hasn’t decided upon his next step, but he’s definitely not retiring. “I’m like Peter Pan,” he said, “I have to decide what I want to do when I grow up. I like a turnaround or a fast-growth business. I just know that I’m not going back to department stores.”
Ball was a former executive with Federated Department Stores and a one-time head of men’s wear for the New York division of Macy’s.
“I’ve got an apartment in Dallas, I’m going to keep the house in Wyoming and I’ve got a place in Atlanta,” he said. “I’ll probably spend most of my time in Dallas, but I plan on taking my time deciding what I want to do next.”
In January of 2007, Corral West merged with BTWW Retail, a Dallas-based business that owns Cooper's, Western Warehouse, Boot Town and Sergeant's Western World stores.
In other news, the company has combined the excess inventory from their stores for a massive sale that’s currently underway at a former 45,000-square-foot Toys ‘R’ Us store near Ingram Park Mall in San Antonio.
The sale event is expected to last for four or five months, according to Stevan Buxbaum, executive vice-president of Buxbaum Group, which is conducting the special promotional sale. He said the sale is offering 26,000 pairs of boots and millions of dollars worth of apparel.
“The combined companies have gone through the integration process and are now in the process of clearing our inventory so that they can move forward with a consistent mix of styles and products in their stores,” he said.
If the sale is successful, the store might be converted to a permanent outlet location for the combined retailers, Buxbaum said.
