NEW YORK — Marc Jacobs is building his presence out West and in Europe.
The westward move has Marc Jacobs International opening a Marc by Marc Jacobs boutique at 2142 Fillmore Street in San Francisco.
Robert Duffy, Marc Jacobs' president, said he had wanted the Marc Jacobs collection store, which opened at 125 Maiden Lane in 2000, to be located on Fillmore Street, but couldn't find the appropriate space at the time.
"The spot that we found is actually the one that I had wanted then," Duffy said. "When it became available, my real estate agent called me ... so I grabbed it. I love that corner and I love that building."
The store, with about 2,000 square feet of selling space, will be created by Stephan Jaklitsch Design, which also designed the other Marc Jacobs boutiques, with furniture created by Christian Liaigre. It will be similar in feel to the Marc by Marc Jacobs boutique on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, and is scheduled to open next July.
The San Francisco unit is part of a growing retail network for Jacobs. Over the past year, the company has expanded with boutiques on Melrose Place, as well as at the Bal Harbour Shops in South Florida. This November, Jacobs will open a 1,500-square-foot boutique at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
To better serve the West Coast business, Duffy said the company is near to signing a deal for an office space in Los Angeles, though he did not disclose any further details.
Duffy singled out Savannah, Ga., and Newport, R.I., as other potential locations for Marc by Marc Jacobs units. "There is the Savannah College of Art and Design," he said. "I am also fascinated by Newport. I have friends who live in Newport and it's such a charming town."
As for Europe, the company is close to signing a lease for its first Marc Jacobs store in London. It is expected to be located on Mount Street in London's tony Mayfair area. Like Melrose Place, Mount Street is largely untapped by fashion designers and features mostly antique shops. Duffy said he would like to follow the London opening, tentatively scheduled for next September, with a Marc by Marc Jacobs store, preferably across the street.
