Matalan Retail Ltd. has expanded its international presence through the opening of two franchise stores in Malta.The stores are based in Sliema at The Strand, and in Fgura on Zabbar Road. Both stores offer Matalan’s full range of its traditional products of affordable fashion for the family and homewares. Matalan worked with The Camilleri Group, the firm’s franchise representatives in Malta. Camilleri’s operations include fashion retail brands, confectionary and catering.Damian Hopkins, Matalan’s international director, said that “trading has been very strong in both of our new stores exceeding our expectations; we have been delighted by the local customers’ reactions to our product ranges and our competitive price position.”The new stores combined employ a staff of 60, according to Matalan. The company operates 227 stores in the U.K., an e-commerce site and 25 overseas franchise stores. Its first international franchise store was in Dubai in 2010. More recently in October, Matalan opened a store in Yerevan, Armenia. The company, which has a presence in the Middle East region, said it is “looking at other countries” for expansion, particularly in Eastern Europe.
