Jenny J. Ming, who ran Gap Inc.’s Old Navy division for more than seven years, has joined private equity firm Advent International as an operating partner to explore investment opportunities in apparel retailing.

Advent said Ming will work with the firm’s deal team in Boston and support investment activities globally.

She began her career with Gap Inc. in 1986 as merchandise manager of Gap brand activewear before shifting to Old Navy as executive vice president of merchandising, responsible for store design, visual merchandising, planning and distribution, before rising to president. She catapulted Old Navy into a national retail force and took it to more than $6 billion in volume and more than 900 stores. She racked up an impressive record, and was included in Fortune magazine’s 2003 and 2004 lists of the “50 Most Powerful Women in American Business.” In 1999, she was named one of the Top 25 Managers of the Year by Business Week.

However, during the last two years of her tenure, Old Navy’s same-store sales started sinking and the division lost market share. She left the business in July 2006.
