This season, the Neiman Marcus magalogue contains an unusual flourish of photography to commemorate 20 years of the store’s Art of Fashion campaign.

The magalogue, called “The Book,” is devoted to the Art of Fashion campaign and features fashion photography from a group of photographers from previous Art of Fashion campaigns as well as the work of Nadav Kander, which takes center stage, for the campaign.

That’s a big break from tradition. Normally, Neiman’s Art of Fashion campaign gets integrated into several pages but doesn’t take over the book to such an extent. And normally, only one photographer shoots the top models and exclusive merchandise, to give his or her signature to the campaign.

The Art of Fashion campaign occurs twice annually, highlights the most prominent and fashion-forward designers from around the world and appears in ads and online as well as in the book, which is issued in September and March. The September edition lands in mailboxes beginning Wednesday.

“Since fashion design is an artistic expression of a designer and then the individual who ends up wearing the clothes, our approach was one of portraiture for punctuating the 20th anniversary of The Art of Fashion campaign,” said Georgia Christensen, executive creative director of Neiman Marcus.

“In doing so, we chose world renowned portrait photographer Nadav Kander to create 28 portraits of 18 different models. As one of the most highly regarded photographers of our time, his work is collected around the world and, because of this, we thought he was the perfect choice for this campaign,” she added.

As he says in the book, Kander created a false perception set and “a gentle idea that nobody’s feet ever touch the floor.” The London-based Kander is known for his portraiture and brand imagery — his photos are part of the public collections at the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The 10 returning photographers, shooting what the company considers this fall’s key looks in apparel, accessories, jewelry and cosmetics, include Geof Kern, who shot jewelry in a “conceptual, but stark, post-modern” feeling, as well as Peggy Sirota, who shot “Girls, Girls, Girls.” The other alumni photographers are Ruven Afanador, Diego Uchitel, Peter Lindbergh, Arthur Elgort, Camilla Akrans, Raymond Meier, Erik Madigan Heck and Walter Chin. Each story opens with an inset image from the photographer’s previous campaign.

The double-gatefold cover features a collage of images from past Art of Fashion campaigns, the first of which was shot by Richard Avedon. The campaign was reprised the next season with Helmut Newton.

Designer merchandise featured in the fall campaign includes looks from Akris, Alexander McQueen, Azzedine Alaïa, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Brunello Cucinelli, Burberry, Carolina Herrera, Chanel, Christian Dior, Christian Louboutin, Dolce & Gabbana, Emilio Pucci, Givenchy, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Lanvin, Manolo Blahnik, Mary Katrantzou, Nina Ricci, Oscar de la Renta, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Ralph Lauren Black Label, Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, The Row, Tom Ford and Valentino.
