NEW YORK — Nordstrom Inc. is expanding its luxury empire to New England.
With its first Massachusetts store slated to open in spring 2007, Nordstrom Inc. announced plans Thursday for three additional stores in the Boston area to open in the next several years. Currently, most Nordstrom shoppers in Boston and its suburbs travel to Rhode Island to shop.
Nordstrom's first store will open in the Natick Mall in Natick, which is owned by General Growth Properties Trust. Three more stores will open in consecutive years, all in Simon Property Group malls. The first will be in Burlington Mall, in Burlington, in spring 2008; next in South Shore Plaza in Braintree, in spring 2009; and finally, one in Northshore Mall in Peabody, in spring 2010.
Rick Sokolov, president and chief operating officer of Simon, noted that each of the three malls would undergo significant renovations with the addition of Nordstrom, including both retail and restaurant development.
The malls, which are currently anchored by Filene's, Lord & Taylor, Macy's and Sears, would also be considerably more upscale with a Nordstrom in the mix.
The Seattle-based retailer has been actively looking for a site in the Boston metropolitan area for more than 25 years, said president Blake Nordstrom in a statement.
