According to an announcement by Overstock.com chairman and chief executive officer Patrick Byrne and Wayne Pacelle, president and ceo of the Humane Society of the U.S., the decision was made in reaction to continued problems with mislabeled fur garments. Byrne said the decision to halt the sale of fur would cost the company “more than $1 million and less than $5 million” in the next year. The statement said the attraction of socially conscious consumers to the site should make up for some of the lost sales. Overstock.com will continue to sell faux fur.
