J.C. Penney Co. Inc. chief executive officer Ron Johnson might have another obstacle in his path in his pursuit of the company’s reinvigoration — his customers’ below-average embrace of mobile technologies.

Penney’s finished last among 10 department stores and discounters in a survey of nearly 24,600 U.S. adults in the compilation of stores’ Mobile Aptitude Scores undertaken as part of BIGinsight’s Media Behaviors and Influence Study in the last two months of 2011. The survey measured shoppers’ mobile device ownership; use, including apps and QR code readers; purchase influence, and frequency of mobile Internet access, in addition to other factors.
