Nordstrom will open a three-level, 188,000-square-foot store in Toronto in fall 2016 at the Yorkdale Shopping Centre, which is one of North America’s most productive and fashionable malls.
“Yorkdale is clearly a premier fashion destination, home to an impressive mix of retailers and we’re excited to be part of the center,” said Karen McKibbin, president of Nordstrom Canada.
Last year, Nordstrom revealed its debut in Canada will be in fall 2014 with a 140,000-square-foot, two-level unit in the Chinook Centre in Calgary. That store will be followed in spring 2015 by a two-level, 157,000-square-foot unit in Ottawa’s Rideau Centre and a three-level, 228,000-square-foot site in Vancouver’s Pacific Centre. A two-level, 138,000-square-foot store site in Sherway Gardens on the west end of Toronto will open in fall 2016. Those four units are happening through a partnership with Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd.
Yorkdale is in greater Toronto on the northern end of the city, but Nordstrom is believed to be interested in the heart of Toronto as well, though venues are hard to find.
“We think we have the potential to get to eight to 10 full-line stores and over 20 Racks over time in Canada,” said Nordstrom spokesman Colin Johnson. “We are continuing to look at opportunities in all the cities where we want to have a store presence,” he added. He also said the company is open to looking at other sites in Toronto, but did not specify.
Yorkdale Shopping Centre has undergone four major renovations since opening in 1964, including a $200 million investment in 2012. In its 1.6 million square feet of retail space, the mall generates over $1,300 in sales per square foot. Stores include Holt Renfrew, Hudson’s Bay, J. Crew, Tory Burch, Crate & Barrel, Indigo, Burberry, Tiffany, Apple and Cartier. Yorkdale is co-owned by Oxford Properties and Alberta Investment Management Corp., and is managed by Oxford.
