Pop-In@Nordstrom, a series of themed pop-ups located at the retailer’s eight flagship locations, on Friday launched a Poketo shop based on the Los Angeles retailer whose philosophy is, “Art and Design for Your Every Day.” Other upcoming Pop-Ins include a Rag & Bone shop in August, which will include exclusive pieces, and a socially responsible shop in September.
Pop-In@Nordstrom is the brainchild of Olivia Kim, director of creative projects, who handpicks merchandise with price points spanning the high and low range. Kim was vice president of creative at Opening Ceremony before Nordstrom hired her last year. She doesn’t like to play it safe. “They’re about disrupting the space,” she said of the Pop-Ins.
The shops have a different theme each month. Past shops have featured home and gift items from Merci in Paris, a custom black-on-black Rolex by Bamford, a private astrology reading by identical twin sisters and astrologers the Astro Twins, and apparel from rapper Drake’s October’s Very Own label.
Now that she has six Pop-Ins under her belt, Kim said she’s learned that “what works really well is when we can tell a complete story. Also, when we can offer the high-to-low price point — we always try to have something that starts at $1. When we can introduce new designers and vendors to customers, that works really well. We want our customers to be able to come back and discover something. We’re tapping into their curiosity.”
Kim said some designers introduced through Pop-Ins have gone on to be picked up by other buyers in the store.
An avid pen collector and self-proclaimed old-fashioned card writer, Kim was taken by Poketo’s products and ties to the art and design community. The Pop-In will be the first time customers outside of Los Angeles will be able to shop the brand’s offerings. Kim said the Pop-In will look like Poketo’s store. “It was a real collaboration,” she said. “It will be very colorful.”
Poketo’s products range from the whimsical to the practical with everything in between. There’s a build-it-yourself paper hanging mobile, fruity beeswax candles and charcoal facial puffs. The Pop-In also sells Pendleton blankets and beach towels, Sweets linen tea towels and woven leather chairs, tables and planters from artist and designer Eric Trine, as well as exclusive Ben Medansky ceramic lanterns, Clare Vivier’s chic minimalist bags and necklaces and cuffs from L.A.-based HighLow jewelry. “Poketo is really known for celebrating their friends and doing incredible workshops in their store,” Kim said. “We have a paper sculpting class that we’re hosting with an artist who’ll come in and teach customers how to make paper flowers.”
