NEW YORK — Allen Questrom was elected to the Jones Apparel Group Inc. board, bringing the total number of members to 10.

Questrom, who has 40 years experience in the retail industry, will join the board on Dec. 13. Most recently, he was chairman and chief executive officer of J.C. Penney Co. Inc. Questrom retired from Penney's in January. Before that, he was chairman, president and ceo of Barneys New York, which was acquired by Jones in December 2004. Prior to that position, he was chairman and ceo of Federated Department Stores Inc., as well as president and ceo of Neiman Marcus.

"He is a proven industry leader with an unparalleled and distinguished career," said Peter Boneparth, ceo of Jones Apparel Group. "Allen has always impressed us as one of the few great thinkers. He's been successful in everything he's done and we welcome him to our board."

Questrom is currently a principal of AEA Investors Inc. and serves as a member of the board of Sotheby's Holdings Inc. and Burt's Bees. He is also a member of the National Committee of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
