About half an hour after the 10:11 a.m. incident Wednesday, the Roosevelt Field mall in Garden City, N.Y., was placed in lockdown, at 10:45 a.m. Shortly before 1 p.m., police were allowing those inside any of the mall’s 270 stores to exit should they choose to. After police searched the area, the mall reopened to the public and planned to close at its normal time of 9:30 p.m. Some stores remained closed since they had already sent their employees home, said a spokesman for Simon Properties, which owns the Roosevelt Field mall.
“We are encouraging people to call the stores they are interested in going to beforehand,” the spokesman said.
The mall planned to operate under its normal business hours Thursday.
“The police are still searching for the suspect, but there was never any indication that he was on the premises,” the spokesman said.
Nassau County Police said the suspect killed one man and wounded another at Save Energy, a light fixture company located at 645 South Street. According to NCP’s Office of Information, “An Asian man, armed with a handgun, entered Save Energy, confronted the employees and began shooting, striking two male victims. At that time, the suspect fled the scene in a white colored SUV in an unknown direction. One male victim has succumbed to his injuries, and the second male victim is currently in surgery at a local hospital.”
The suspect has been identified by police as Sang Ho Kim, who is about 63 years old and about 6 feet 2 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a red shirt with a gray or brown suit jacket, and fled the scene in a white Honda Pilot with a New York license plate registered as FMA3648. A photo of the suspect is available though the Public Information Office.
