LOS ANGELES -- Arnold Scaasi visited San Francisco Wednesday to kick off a three-day trunk show at I. Magnin. By late Friday, sales had surpassed $175,000.

Scaasi was feted during a luncheon and fashion show in the third-floor designer salon Wednesday, a benefit for Partners for Ending Domestic Abuse. He then spent an hour and a half in his area of the floor and helped push first-day orders to $60,000.. Joseph Cicio, Magnin's chairman and chief executive officer, said Scaasi's dressier evening styles were especially appropriate because women are going out more these days.

"He is the perfect designer for the California woman for evening," Cicio said. "It was great to see color and a positive approach to dressing."

Bestsellers included a variations of navy draped-shoulder dress, which sold eight at $1,900 to $2,000; a navy and white lace short cocktail dress, which sold three at $3,000, and a long navy sheer lace gown, which sold three at $3,490.
