NEW YORK -- Marvin Shapanka will become president of Steinbach Inc., a regional department store chain based in White Plains, N.Y., on Jan. 3.
He succeeds Tony Vasarius, who left the company.
Shapanka was general merchandise manager for sportswear, juniors, coats and dresses at Boscov's Department Stores, based in Reading, Pa. At Steinbach, Shapanka reports to Jay Schottenstein, chairman and chief executive officer of the 27-store chain. Schottenstein Stores Corp., Columbus, Ohio, acquired Steinbach in October.
Shapanka began his retailing career with the Bamberger's division of R.H. Macy & Co., later became regional director of stores for Macy's Northeast and, in 1991, joined the G. Fox division of May Department Store Co. as senior vice president, general merchandise manager of sportswear, juniors and coats. Following the merger of G. Fox into Filene's, both divisions of May Department Stores Co., he joined Boscov's.
