Target said Tuesday that a small percentage of its gift cards are not working properly. The gift cards are causing problems for customers who want to redeem them, but are finding out that their worth can’t be determined.

“We are aware that some Target gift cards were not fully activated and apologize for the inconvenience,” a Target spokeswoman said.

She added that the numbers of problematic gift cards reported in the media are much higher than what the retailer experienced. “The actual number of cards impacted was less than 0.1 percent of the total sold during the holiday period,” she said. “Target will honor the impacted cards. If a guest discovers that their gift card has not been activated, they can bring it to the guest service desk at their local Target store or call 1-800-544-2943 for assistance.”

The gift-card snafu comes less than two weeks after Target acknowledged a security breach that could potentially impact as many as 40 million credit and debit card holders who shopped at the retailer’s U.S. stores between Black Friday and Dec. 15. The security breach, which is still being investigated, is unrelated to the gift-card issue.
