Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Tuesday identified the supplier partners that will participate in its first Sustainable Product Expo, a three-day collaborative event to expand the availability of products “that sustain people and the environment,” the company said. Together, the participating suppliers represent more than $100 million in sales at Wal-Mart.
Some of the largest food companies have pledged to ensure that tomorrow’s food supply is affordable and sustainable, Wal-Mart said. The companies include Campbell’s Soup, Dairy Farmers of America, General Mills, Kellogg’s and PepsiCo.
The commitments are intended to drive more collaboration and efficiency across the current food system. In total, the effort is expected to bring eight million acres of farmland into sustainable agriculture programs and eliminate six million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition, Wal-Mart and the Wal-Mart Foundation plan to launch a recycling initiative called the Closed Loop Fund, whose goal is to make recycling available to all Americans. The fund plans to invest $100 million in recycling infrastructure projects to spur private and public funding for transforming the recycling system in the U.S.
The Coca-Cola Co., Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, Keurig Green Mountain, PepsiCo and the PepsiCo Foundation, Procter & Gamble Co., SC Johnson and Unilever are “coming together because we jointly face a system problem: Recycling rates are stagnant and we can’t get enough recycled material in packaging and products,” Wal-Mart said. “We recognize that the solution is to ensure that all Americans have convenient access to recycling. We are calling the rest of our peers and competitors to join us on this journey.”
