Wal-Mart Stores Inc. launched “Walmart Pay” for use on its native app, which allows shoppers with iOS or Android smartphones to pay at any register in the store and with any credit, debit or Wal-Mart gift card.
Neil Ashe, president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart Global e-commerce, said the Wal-Mart app “was built to make shopping faster and easier. Wal-Mart Pay is the latest example — and a powerful addition — of how we are transforming the shopping experience by seamlessly connecting online, mobile and stores for the 140 million customers who shop with us weekly.”
The retailer said the goal is to speed up check out time while “dramatically expanding mobile payment access.”
“With this launch, Wal-Mart becomes the only retailer to offer its own payment solution that works with any iOS or Android device,” the retailer said in a statement adding that it can be used at any checkout “and with any major credit, debit, pre-paid or Wal-Mart gift card — all through the Wal-Mart mobile app.” The payment solution is being rolled out in select stores beginning this month and nationwide by the middle of 2016.
“The simplicity and ease of Wal-Mart Pay comes not only from how it works, but also in how it’s been built,” explained Daniel Eckert, senior vice president, services, Wal-Mart U.S. “We made a strategic decision to design Wal-Mart Pay to work with almost any smartphone and accept almost any payment type — even allowing for the integration of other mobile wallets in the future. The result is an innovation that will make the ease of mobile payments a reality for millions of Americans.”
