NEW YORK — The company that manufactures Vespa scooters has tapped students at Manhattan’s Parsons School of Design to help develop a collection of apparel, accessories and wearable technologies, and maybe even a scooter or two.

Students were asked to develop fashions and product ideas to help integrate Vespa into the lifestyles of U.S. teenagers and young adults. They were also charged with helping the company develop eco-friendly concepts to deal with problems such as traffic congestion.

The partnership is between Piaggio USA, a division of Tuscany, Italy-based Piaggio Group, and Parsons Design Lab, which brings together corporations and nonprofit organizations and Parsons students to develop design solutions.

“As scooters become an integral part of the American and global cultural landscape, we feel that Parsons is the right design school to look at how young people will adopt scooter culture,” said Paolo Timoni, chief executive officer of Piaggio USA.

The designs will be unveiled at the school’s May benefit and fashion show.

Introduced in 1946, Vespas have had a resurgence recently, and the firm has teamed with other designers to develop fashion-forward scooters.
