A talking facsimile of Jean Paul Gaultier will greet visitors to the exhibit of his designs making their debut June 17 at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, explained Thierry-Maxime Loriot, curator of “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.” “We molded the head of Jean Paul in plaster and we will have [film] projections right onto the face,” Loriot explained. Talking heads of Gaultier’s celebrity clients and models will also appear atop mannequins in the exhibit via the same multimedia technique, including model Eve Salvail and former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf der Maur.
Loriot described the show at a luncheon hosted by Deedie Rose in Dallas, where the exhibit runs Nov. 13 to Feb. 12 at the Dallas Museum of Art. “I’ve obsessed over this ever since I saw Thierry do a presentation last fall,” said Rose, chairman of the museum’s board of trustees. “This is not just a fashion show. You’re going to see at work a brain that uses the medium of fashion to influence pop culture and to reflect pop culture, and the technology that is going to be part of this is fascinating.” The exhibit will feature 120 fashion ensembles and costumes, 75 percent of which are couture, as well as images including Polaroids by Andy Warhol and memorabilia such as Gaultier’s childhood fashion sketches and the teddy bear that he adorned with paper breasts. “Everybody always asks if there will be any Madonna pieces and, yes, she is doing an exceptional collaboration for the [catalogue] and for the exhibition,” Loriot noted. “So of course we’ll have the two famous corsets from the Blond Ambition tour, the gold one and the salmon one.”
