At the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards Monday night in Los Angeles, Lena Dunham may have made the biggest visual impact — and not for the right reasons — but at least she had heads turning in her voluminous pink ombré Giambattista Valli ballskirt.
The rest of the Hollywood pack looked predictably safe except for a few standouts like Lizzy Caplan in a dramatic black-and-white gown from Donna Karan Atelier, Sofia Vergara in a va-va-voom Roberto Cavalli and Claire Danes in lacy red Givenchy Haute Couture. Valli, who has been steadily gaining red-carpet momentum over the last few seasons, dressed three other actresses this year, which may or may not offset the Dunham effect: Allison Williams in a frothy ballgown, a pregnant Amanda Peet in a floral-printed chiffon frock that she described as “very ‘Virgin Suicides’” and Michelle Monaghan in a white dolman-sleeve sheath straight off the couture runway. It was so pristine, she said, “that I even air-kissed my nine-month-old son good night because I didn’t want to get anything on it.” In a sign that perhaps fashion is taking a backseat to Instagram and YouTube viral videos, some reporters resorted to feeding actors and actresses pizza on the red carpet.

“Modern Family” starlet Sarah Hyland didn’t seem to mind a spot of sauce on her white cropped halter as she and Jason Biggs munched on their slices. Some actresses kicked off their shoes less than an hour into the red carpet at the Nokia Theater L.A. Live. “I’m wearing Dolce & Gabbana and my husband is carrying Christian Louboutin,” said Felicity Huffman as William H. Macy trailed behind holding her studded stilettos. A pregnant Hayden Panettiere was not too far behind.
“The first thing I’m going to do when I’m done here is find some flats and maybe a guy who’s willing to donate a foot massage,” she said. Julia Roberts was in an above-the-knee navy Elie Saab frock. “It’s short, so I’m not sweating like everyone else,” she said. While there may not have been the fireworks of previous shows, or the flamboyant looks of the night before’s MTV Video Music Awards, in the end Hollywood did what it does best — entertain. As an eager pack of reporters grilled Jimmy Fallon about his tuxedo, he cracked, “It’s Ryan Seacrest Collection.”
