Most of the attendees at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards kept their time on the red carpet short and sweet before heading inside. Perhaps it was due to award season fatigue. Or maybe they just needed some air conditioning. Thanks to the unseasonably hot afternoon, any fear of a makeup meltdown was, for once, justified. Still that didn’t stop Liza Minnelli from wearing black pants and a heavy fur cape as she entered the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday.
Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock and Sofía Vergara embraced exposed shoulders with metallic and sparkling strapless gowns; Christian Dior Haute Couture for Lawrence, Lanvin for Bullock and Donna Karan Atelier for Vergara. But it was mother-to-be Kerry Washington who caused the event’s biggest stir by sporting a pink midriff-baring embellished crop top with a navy silk skirt from Prada. “I wanted something fun…that would fit,” said the six-months-pregnant star. “I always have to love it. I have to put it on and love it.”
Natalie Dormer of “Game of Thrones” showed off her new edgy, half-shaved haircut inspired by her role in the upcoming “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.” She completed the look with a French braid cascading down to the nape of her neck. “It’s interesting because, when you do something this dramatic with your hair, you find that when you’re trying on dresses, if the dress makes a big statement, it’s almost too much,” she said of her Marios Schwab gown. “So we stayed away from prints; we stayed away from bright colors. I thought with the hair I’d go with simple so the hair stood out.”
Oprah Winfrey — who greeted reporters arms outstretched — had her mind elsewhere. “I want to grab a burger, now,” she said of her rumbling stomach. Sarah Hyland was already ahead of her. After a journalist offered Hyland half her sandwich, the “Modern Family” actress accepted it and nibbled while completing the interview.
Matt Damon and Amy Adams waved to fans in the bleachers, while Jennifer Garner and Cate Blanchett air-kissed one another. Lupita Nyong’o, perhaps tired from the night before, skipped speaking and walked the carpet via the nonceleb guest entrance.
Gretchen Mol was analyzing her fellow nominees sartorial choices. “I love it, it’s one of my favorite things to do, to pore over everybody,” she said, her eyes gazing down the carpet. “Everybody looks beautiful, though.”
