Madonna is not one to take criticism lying down. On Sunday night, the musician performed a tribute to Prince at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, which apparently did not sit well with some. Taking to Instagram on Monday night, Madonna posted a photo of herself clad in a Burberry suit, writing, “Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to. Whatever your age, gender or skin color. If you loved him and he inspired you then show it!!!! I love Prince forever,” complete with purple emojis.
Madonna’s tribute, during which she wore a Gucci suit and Miu Miu boots, was alongside Stevie Wonder. After the performance she shared several photos on Instagram, writing, “Such an amazing moment for me! Thanks to all who made it happen!!!”
But some were less than impressed with her tribute. “U sucked…I’m white. I like you doing you Madonna…U shoulda took a pass and referred them to a ‘real’ Prince protegé and/or collaborator,” one commenter wrote. “It was in bad taste. And the dark graveyard background?? If you were so ‘cool’ with Prince and knew him so well, you should have told them to chill with the dark stuff. Prince was not about that dreary s–t and Madonna you sang Sinead [O’Connor’s] version!! Lol…A joke. Prince is going to come back and haunt every last one of you who are out to #exploithim!!”
Madonna appears to be unbothered by critics though. As one of her Instagram posts said, “deal with it!”
