Sometimes glass ceilings can be a good thing. Take Monday night for example, when Valentino hosted a festive spring dinner on the Gramercy Hotel Rooftop just as a nor’easter was making its way out of New York.

Thanks to the enclosure covering the patio, guests stayed dry as they squeezed into the bar area and mingled among the citrus trees and Valentino red tulips on the terrace. Partygoers including Amanda Brooks, Lauren Davis, Jennifer Creel, Allison Sarofim and Rachel Zoe all seemed to enjoy shaking off the winter chill for one of the first events marking the spring social season.

Dinner began with a shrimp ceviche but not everyone was eager to dig in. “I can’t eat seafood,” said Simon Hammerstein, who arrived with pal Josh Lucas and a crew of rag tag boys. “Are you kosher?” someone asked. “No, but I’m at least pretending to be,” the scruffy-haired Hammerstein replied.

In Midtown, the Baryshnikov Arts Center filled up with art world buffs as the Humane Society of New York held its annual Fine Arts Photography Auction, which runs through the weekend. There was a Marlene Dietrich shot that went for $11,000, a Steven Klein photo of a horses behind that went for over $2,000, and enough glossy portraits of celebrities to fill Vanity Fair for at least a year. Cornelia Guest played hostess, which was more than fitting. “I have 11 dogs,” she said. “And I just adopted a labrador from the Humane Society.”
