THE AFFAIR OF THE NECKLACE: Guests at a Celine-sponsored dinner to celebrate the Doris Duke collection auction at Christie’s, which begins tomorrow, were especially smitten by Lot 111, a Belle Epoque diamond and pearl pendant necklace by Cartier, circa 1908. The piece, displayed for the evening on a table centerpiece, is valued at between $800,000 and $1.2 million, and the small crowd, which included Tara and Michael Rockefeller, Sloan Barnett and Nathalie Kaplan, wanted to see it modeled. The neck they chose? Karenna Gore Schiff’s. “Karenna! Karenna!” they shouted, “Stand up! Put the diamond on her.” Gore Schiff obliged and then passed the necklace around the rectangular table for others to give it a whirl. Her husband, one of the evening’s hosts, however, seemed more willing to spring for the champagne on auction. “Dom Perignon is my favorite member of the clergy,” Drew Schiff joked, in a toast of sorts. “I get some religion from time to time.”
